Fifth Grade Class

 

 

 

In the upcoming school year, the fifth grade will study a wide array of topics.  The following will give a broad description of the subject that will be covered.

 

Social Studies - The social studies program begins with the Native American movement in North America, to the Europeans travel to North America.  We will then cover the establishment of the United States, along with the government and Manifest Destiny.  This book will also cover the numerous wars and battles that the United States has been involved in including: fiction, fantasy, nonfiction and others.  The students will read a story a week in the text book and take a quiz on each story.  In additional to the weekly story, the students will be required to complete a couple of book reports throughout the year.

 

Religion:  In the fifth grade, the religion program covers all seven sacraments.  The first half of the year is a broad overview of the sacraments whereas the second half of the year studies each sacrament individually.

 

English:  The English program concentrates on both grammer and writing.  The program focuses on the fundamentals and mechanics of grammer as well as the various aspects used to develop beginning writing skills.

 

Spelling:  The spelling program is a combination of spelling and vocabulary.  The students will work with 12 words every week.  In doing this, they will learn the definition as well as the spelling through various activities in their workbook.  They will have a spelling and a vocabulary test every week after the lesson has been completed.

 

Mathematics:  The Saxon program covers many mathematical skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, decimals and three place numbers.  It also works with word problems, critical thinking and logic.

 

Reminders:

 

Communication:

 - I can be reached through a note, phone call or email.  I will get back to you as soon as possible. 
 - Please send all notes about a student's dismissal to the office or call the office because I will only be able to check email before or after school.

 

Electronics and Cell Phones:

 - Cell phones should remain in the off position and in the backpack while in the school building.  Please refer to the handbook for further clarification.

 - Electronics such as hand-held games, Ipods, cameras. etc. are not permitted.

 

Field Trips:

 - Volunteers must have an I-Chat form completed as well as the Protecting God's Children workshop.
 - Volunteer drivers may not bring treats for their group, nor may they stop before or after the field trip to buy snacks.

 

Birthdays:

 - Students may bring a small treat for his/her homeroom class only.

 - These treats should be finger food (no beverages) that do not require refrigeration and should be pre-sliced.

 - The student should confer with his/her teacher in advance regarding a convenient day to bring the treat.

 - Please send napkins.

 

Homework:

 - Homework is given on a daily bases.  Most of the homework assignments are begun in class.  Students should use this time wisely.  Math assignments should be reviewed on a nightly basis.
