LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER CURRICULUM BENCHMARKS

INSTRUCTION:

Students in grades K-8 have a scheduled weekly library class period.  The time allotted is determined by the class schedule for that school year.

When classes are not scheduled, the library media center is open to all teachers and students as a resource center.

KINDERGARTEN:

• Learning about the library
• Parts of a book & story
• Proper library manners and book care
• Borrowing procedures
• Listening to stories

1st & 2nd GRADES:

• Exploring the differences between fiction and non-fiction reading 
• Beginning library vocabulary 
• Drawing projects 
• Listening to and creating imaginative stories

3rd & 4th GRADES:

• Guidelines for better book selection and examination of genres of fiction 
• Develop dictionary and encyclopedia skills
• Begin lessons with library automation
• Reading activities with games, puzzles & worksheets

5th & 6th GRADES:

• Lessons on basic study skills such as notetaking, memorization, organization, etc. 
• Increased library vocabulary
• Lessons in advanced library automation searching
• Exploration of non-fiction reading

7th & 8th GRADES:

• Study hall periods
