ART CURRICULUM BENCHMARKS
The value of art education is not as an extra-curricular activity nor is it meant to be a means of discovering the Van Gogh of tomorrow.
Through the study of art, students learn that one problem can have many right answers. An art room is a place to learn that individual thoughts
and ideas are admired; that unique and original solutions to problems are praised. A child must learn that being different can be rewarding and satisfying.
An art room provides a much needed environment for the 21st century child. While exploring a wide variety of artistic media problem solving
skills, good self-esteem and originality become part of the natural process.
Pragmatic and lifelong patterns of creative behavior provide a balance and challenge for every student. Quality art education
introduced in the early years of childhood promotes the growth of flexible and creative adults who can intellectually and emotionally
relate to the world around them.
