The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is intended for anyone who deals with any chronic or critical illness - whether in body or spirit. It would be especially appropriate to take advantage of the anointing if you have an impending surgery. Since Vatican II and the reforms of the sacramental rituals, Anointing of the Sick replaced the earlier "Sacrament of Extreme Unction," which was administered in danger of death. Now the Church emphasizes the healing power of the Lord and forgiveness of sins that a person can experience through the Sacrament received as many times as there is a perceived need. While the Sacrament still prepares a person for death and ultimate union with the Lord, for the most part, it celebrates healing and reconciliation. The touch of the priest upon our head and open palms reminds us we are not alone in our pain and struggle; more than ever we are united with the rest of the Body of Christ, the Church. Others are praying for us even as we pray with them and for them, offering our pain as a sacrifice of love for each other.
Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated at all masses the weekend of March 25/26, 2017.
For individual anointings, please contact the parish office at (248) 646-2244.
Msgr. Zenz regularly visits hospitals, nursing homes, and private residences to administer the Sacrament on an individual basis.
